A Magical Moment

Hummingbirds are elusive.  For a few seconds they hover at a feeder or flower, then like the flicker of a green flash at sunset they disappear, which is why my morning was so memorable.

As I watered my toddler tree, the spray unfurled like a springtime shower, a fountain of twinkling dots.  To my amazement, a tiny hummingbird perched himself atop the baby tree’s protective fence, basking in the bath!  Throwing his head to and fro, white-tipped wings fluttering with enthusiasm, he was thoroughly relishing the invigorating spray.  I held my breath, holding the hose steady, knowing this was a monumental, memorable, magical moment.  I could hardly believe the sight.  I wished my eyes could capture a video so others could admire and amaze.  Fantasy became reality.  I was assisting one of God’s tiniest creatures with his morning preen!

As much as I cherished the magical moment, curiosity overcame me.  If I moved his shower would he follow?  I did, and he did!  Mr. H. swept into the arching fountain, hovering in place, still shaking his head in sheer bliss.

If anyone doubts that God walks with us - engages in the intricacies of our lives - may I soberly share: this marvel appeared immediately after humbly confessing to my Father my bondage to bullying.  (I want what I want and you’re in my way!)  He heard my broken and contrite heart and sent me a mighty, mini miracle.  I am confident that soon I’ll see a spirit of gentleness, peace and patience, as seemingly impossible for me as giving a hummingbird a bath.

“Give thanks to the Lord of Lords,

To Him who alone does great wonders,

For His steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalm 136:4
